Water damage can be prevented by maintaining your home well. By carefully inspecting your home’s plumbing and adjusting the runoff grade around your home, there’s a lot you can do to help keep your home watertight. Below are 10 tips on how to prevent water damage. Some are pretty easy…others are just not practical on a daily basis. That is why our last tip is the absolute best option.

  1. Shut your water main off every time you leave the house
  2. Open your kitchen cabinets, closet doors on subzero days/nights
  3. Check hi-risk areas twice day
  4. Inspect hot water heater pressure relief valves annually and replace the valves every 2 years
  5. Replace plumbed appliance hoses frequently (washer every 5 year)
  6. Clean gutters of debris
  7. You can do a self-test by turning off all water and watching your water meter for 30 minutes to determine if any water usage shows on the meter…if you see the water meter needle move. You have a leak!!!  Now you need to find where it is.
